Born into a musical family, Shyamala exhibited signs of musical talent at a very young age. She started learning Carnatic music formally around the age of four from her mother Rajeswari Satish.
Shyamala continues to learn from Rajeswari. She receives guidance from Sri Neyveli Santhanagopalan and Sri P.S. Narayanaswamy whenever possible. Shyamala had the opportunity to learn some kritis from Smt R. Vedavalli during her US visit in 2007. YSL teachers guide and motivate her, and she derives inspiration from her YSL peers.
Shyamala is currently a junior at Montgomery High school. She has been learning Western violin since the age of three and is a first violin member of her school's chamber orchestra. She is also self-taught on the piano. Her interests include singing other genres of music, composing music, politics, debate, writing, reading, and tennis. She is an officer in the New Jersey Youth and Government program as well as her school's Model United Nations conference. She also interned for a summer in the research department at New York University's Langone Medical Center.
